Together we rise far above the disk and turn to see the whole of it — a barred spiral of a few hundred billion suns, spread flat across a hundred thousand light-years. We drift through the winding spiral arms and learn that the soft band of light across the night sky is our own edge-on view into the disk from inside it, dimmed here and there by dark lanes of dust. We visit the crowded central bulge and its bar, and the quiet giant at the very heart of the galaxy, the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*. We find our own small place, far out in a peaceful arm some twenty-six thousand light-years from the center, and follow the Sun on its long slow orbit — one galactic year of more than two hundred million years. We drift out into the halo among the ancient globular clusters, feel the unseen weight of dark matter that holds it all together, and rise once more to see the Milky Way drifting gently toward its distant meeting with Andromeda.
Throughout, the tone stays patient and honest. Where the science is uncertain, we say so gently. Nothing here is hype — only awe, told slowly, for sleep.
